Scale Coarse-Graining and Reduced-Dimensional Manifolds: Macroscopic Attractors Under Microscopic Perturbations
中文版本 · /zh/blog/coarse-graining-attractors/
In classical dynamical systems and statistical physics, one of the most fascinating phenomena is “emergence”: the complex particle motions composed of countless microscopic degrees of freedom do not, after long-term dynamical evolution and statistical coarse-graining, diverge into unbounded chaos. Instead, they irreversibly fall and collapse onto a very small number of low-dimensional geometric structures, which we call slow manifolds or attractors.
When we turn to the well-known paradox in traditional Chinese stem-and-branch models—“the same Bazi, different destinies”—traditional narratives often resort to unfalsifiable hidden variables, such as causal predestination, hidden feng shui, or moral karmic reward. Such explanations amount, in essence, to giving up explanatory power. Stripped of mystical rhetoric and reconsidered from the perspectives of modern complex systems and the renormalization group (RG), the original Bazi chart is not a holographic negative of microscopic events; it is a dynamical parameter framework that represents the system's dominant eigenstates after extreme dimensional reduction and coarse-graining.
The same set of dynamical equations defines the same set of manifolds in phase space, but the specific landing point of a phase-space trajectory depends on microscopic perturbations and coupling to a high-dimensional environment. “The same Bazi” means topological isomorphism of the macroscopic attractors; “different destinies” means natural bifurcation of microscopic coordinates under boundary constraints.
I. Scale Truncation: From Continuous Microscopic States to a Low-Dimensional Effective Theory
At the heart of renormalization-group logic is the idea that, to understand the macroscopic properties of a complex physical system, we do not need to track the instantaneous position of every microscopic molecule. Instead, we must use coarse-graining to remove high-frequency fluctuations and integrate out short-wavelength degrees of freedom, retaining only the “relevant operators” that govern large-scale behavior.
The composite system formed by human life and its environment has almost infinitely many degrees of freedom, encompassing genetic and epigenetic modifications, microscopic encounters, spatiotemporal location, and complex social interactions. The stem-and-branch calendar system is, in essence, an ancient systems theorist's radical act of “scale truncation”:
It discards all microscopic noise in continuous spacetime, retaining only four key temporal phases in Earth's orbital and rotational rhythms (year, month, day, and hour), which it projects into a discrete symbolic matrix of celestial stems and earthly branches.
This operation is equivalent to a low-energy effective field theory in condensed-matter physics. The model constructed by Bazi was never intended to predict microscopic events such as “the exact time and amount of money one will receive tomorrow.” It retains only the system's symmetry, energy polarity, and coupling strength:
- Rooting through the stems and branches, and stems appearing above the branches: These represent the strength of the energy order parameter in particular degrees of freedom.
- Generating, overcoming, restraining, transforming, punishments, clashes, meetings, and combinations: These represent positive and negative feedback loops and dissipation mechanisms between different dynamical subsystems.
Thus, the “omniscient chart” claim—that a chart can predict every concrete event in reality—is a dimensional-reduction catastrophe in systems dynamics. Inferring high-dimensional microscopic coordinates from a low-dimensional effective manifold is an ill-posed inverse problem in mathematics: its solution cannot be unique.
II. The Interface Between Inner and Outer Spaces: Asymmetric Mapping and Phase-Space Rendering
How does the circulation of energy within the system become concrete physical events in the external world?
We can divide the system into two levels:
- Inner layer (intrinsic dynamical space): The interaction network formed by the Bazi stems and branches. Only vector algebra and dynamical coupling operate here, such as phase-interference cancellation (Clash), resonance of closed loops (Combination), or orthogonal-axis dissipation (Punishment).
- Outer layer (real-world phase space): The actual macroscopic world, including social structures, material resources, geopolitics, and the free will of other people.
There is no rigid, mechanical one-to-one correspondence between these two spaces. Instead, they are connected by an asymmetric topological mapping mechanism that performs “protocol encapsulation and state rendering.”
The tension structure of the inner layer is encapsulated as a dimensionless “signal of dynamical tendency.” When realized in the outer space, it must follow three phase-space constraint principles:
1. Principle of Existence (Carrier-Topology Matching)
The outer phase space must contain physical degrees of freedom through which the dynamical form can be expressed. If the inner layer exhibits an extreme tendency toward “Output consuming and draining,” in an ancient agrarian society it might converge into an unorthodox scholar or a vagrant; in today's highly specialized information society, it might map to a self-media content creator or an innovator in a nonstandard field. If the corresponding degrees of freedom do not exist in the real-world medium, the pattern cannot be activated in the outer layer.
2. Principle of Potential-Energy Abundance (Environmental-Scale Rescaling)
The inner dynamics provide only a slope (a trend), not an absolute displacement (a magnitude). For example, “a strong self-element with weak wealth, transformed through Output” represents, dynamically, an efficient system-dissipation and external-resource-attraction mechanism. Yet in a closed rural area with a stagnant economy, the resource limit that can be attracted by this dynamical structure may amount to only tens of thousands of yuan in individual surplus. Coupled instead to a globalized, capital-abundant, liquid market, the amplitude captured by the same dynamical cycle may expand into valuations of hundreds of millions.
3. Principle of Multi-Body Perturbation (Reaction to the Free Will of Others)
The real world is a vast nonlinear many-body system. An individual's dynamical trajectory cannot evolve in a vacuum; it inevitably encounters the gravitational fields of countless independent agents. When the inner system emits a “Combination” signal (strong gravitational coupling), an external object in the environment may impose asymmetric repulsive stress, deflecting that trajectory.
III. Convergence of the Solution Space: Trajectory Collapse Under Bayesian Updating
If the same Bazi corresponds to the same macroscopic dynamical core, why do the life trajectories of identical twins visibly bifurcate in the real world?
In a dynamical system, we can use a first-order system as a qualitative analogy:
Y(t) = \mathbf{K} \cdot X(t) + \mathbf{C}Here, X(t) is the effective evolution operator of the inner Bazi dynamics as time advances (through major and annual cycles), \mathbf{K} is the trend-transfer tensor, and \mathbf{C} is the non-negligible vector of exogenous boundary conditions (initial social class, geographical latitude, family cognitive boundaries, and educational resources).
What the original Bazi chart defines is not a rigid, one-dimensional railway track but a solution space constrained by a manifold.
For two individuals with exactly the same inner equation X(t):
- They occupy topologically isomorphic attractor basins.
- During specific perturbation periods (such as years when phases are directly opposed by 180°, called “opposition” years), the sensitivity matrices of both systems increase sharply, and both are prone to the breakdown of an existing steady state, reconstruction of intimate relationships, or a phase reversal in social roles.
- Yet because their microscopic initial conditions \mathbf{C} differ slightly, their piercing points on a Poincaré section are entirely different.
When an observer attempts to make a deterministic assertion about a particular individual's destiny, the process is essentially one of Bayesian probability convergence. The original structure provides only a prior probability distribution (Prior). Only by continually incorporating real-world “anchor information” (the subject's microscopic choices, physical appearance and condition, and social network) and introducing external constraint equations can the high-dimensional solution space gradually collapse into a specific, single-valued trajectory.
IV. Degrees of Freedom Within a Macroscopic Attractor
The fundamental significance of abstracting traditional fate analysis as a modern dynamical-system model is that it breaks the illusion of a closed loop of mechanical fatalism.
If destiny were a microscopic grid precise in every detail, human free will and dynamic adaptability would be completely erased. The insight offered by renormalization-group and dynamical-systems theory is exactly the opposite: Bazi reveals the system's intrinsic damping ratio, resonance frequencies, and attractor skeleton, but the macroscopic manifold retains a richly populated microscopic phase-space volume.
We cannot defy the fundamental geometry of a dynamical manifold—a system dominated by dissipative convergence cannot evolve into a supercritical explosive state through subjective will alone. But an individual's microscopic mode of motion within phase space determines whether the eventual system stabilizes in a benign, low-energy orbit or strikes the manifold's boundary amid violent turbulence.
The same Bazi yielding different destinies is not a collapse of the stem-and-branch geometric system. It is precisely the most natural emergent result of statistical physics in a complex living system: within an invariant low-dimensional attractor, every microscopic life traces an unreproducible branch of its trajectory amid its own environmental perturbations.
